Frankie Montas has made it clear that while he's headed for free agency this offseason, after sitting out for this entire season, he wants to return to the Yankees next spring and beyond.

Montas hasn’t been lifted from the 60-day IL just yet, but manager Aaron Boone reiterated on Friday that the right-hander is in position to pitch at some point before the final out of Game 162 on Sunday. No guarantees, but he’s very much in play.

“He didn’t have to fight his way to get back to here and to pitch. He’s done that,” Boone said. “We certainly respect that and we’re excited to see him, excited to have him here and hopefully we can get him in.” Montas is certainly cognizant of his expiring contract, but the 30-year-old didn’t make it sound like he’s coveting an opportunity to pitch elsewhere. In fact, he made it clear that he wants to be back with the Yankees next year, craving a full season in pinstripes.Boone wasn’t opposed to the idea either, saying he could see a scenario where Montas returns for the 2024 season.

So long as Montas has completely distanced himself from his shoulder injury, it behooves the Yankees to consider re-signing him to an incentive-based contract for next season. If he reaches a certain innings total and pitches to a certain level of effectiveness, the team would pay him what he deserves, perhaps attaching a club option in case they luck out and want to keep the starter around for the following season.
