Los Angeles police commissioners said on Tuesday, March 15, they were concerned that the disciplinary process for officers has been overturning their decisions to mete out punishment to those who wrongly fired their guns while on the job.made public last week shows that of the 66 officers the commission found broke department policy in 2015 to 2020 when firing their weapons, 27 were not punished and another 20 were suspended from two to 55 days.
“Effectively, what is being appealed is the commission’s decision,” Commission Vice President Eileen Decker said. The City Charter guarantees police officers get hearings before a Board of Rights — a three-member panel made up of either two high-ranking officers and a civilian, or all civilians. On Tuesday, the inspector general, Mark Smith, described the Board of Rights hearings as “quasi-judicial,” with officers usually represented by attorneys paid for by their union, the Los Angeles Police Protective League.
