Columnist Sherry Mulley MacDonald laces up to enjoy time on the ice. CONTRIBUTEDWhen I was a young girl growing up in Florence, my favourite thing to do in winter was skate. My friends at the time weren’t much for skating so I would often grab my skates and walk to the outdoor rink on my own. About a seven-minute walk from my home.

There would be locker rooms, washrooms, stands for fans to enjoy what was happening on the ice and a canteen.
