Superintendent Tyson Bennett sits as board members vote in support of opening a third-party probe into the situation where a transgender student was removed from his role in the high school’s production of Oklahoma! during a school board meeting at the Sherman Independent School District building in Sherman on Friday, Nov. 17, 2023. The school board also voted to immediately remove Superintendent Tyson Bennett from supervising the fine arts program until further notice.
In the fall, high school senior Max Hightower learned he was no longer allowed to play a leading male character in the musical. Max is transgender. The decision ignited a firestorm as people across the country decried the district’s decision as bigoted and discriminatory. “Roles will be assigned based on gender where males are cast as males and females are cast as females,” part of the script read. “This will be the way casting will be done moving forward — males will be cast as males; females will be cast as females. I wanted you to know.”The trustees ordered a third-party investigation into the situation months ago but have not released the status of the probe or its findings.
