The event in Pala also offered community members free lock boxes to safely store firearms at home

The Sheriff's Department collected more than 50 firearms at a gun buy back event in Pala on Saturday. Local law enforcement and tribal nation leaders partnered to host the event that aims to get unwanted guns off the street and promote safety. Community members exchanged 56 guns at the Pala Band of Mission Indians Administrative Building. People who turned in handguns, rifles and shotguns received $100 gift cards.

Ghost guns are often made from kits or purchased without a background check. Additionally, event organizers handed out 49 cable locks and 76 gun safety lock boxes for free to help people safely secure firearms stored in their homes. All of the weapons collected at the weekend event will be processed. Law enforcement agencies are notified if any of the donated guns are linked to a crime or were stolen. The rest of the weapons will be destroyed.
