The 24 emergency shelter spaces were opened during the pandemic as a temporary means of addressing a surge in homelessness, but the crisis has only increased since then

With the city’s shelters operating at or near capacity, at least two of them have been cleared by the city’s elected officials to continue operating until March 31, 2024, using federal funds.

Although their decision needs to be ratified by city council as a whole, Monday’s unanimous support points to a likelihood the funding will receive a green light. As of April 6, the city counted 190 people as being “actively homeless,” including 15 staying in encampments, 54 unsheltered, 57 in shelters and 64 provisionally accommodated or “unknown.” This is a jump from the 127 people recorded as actively homeless at this time last year.

The SACY shelter spaces opened at 95 Pine Street in November 2020, and operates overnight from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. It’s open to youths aged 16 to 24 years.
