That foreign workers are taking jobs away from Canadians is a common criticism rooted in ignorance — it's one of those myths that don't line up with reality, and we'd be a lot worse off if it weren't for people who are willing to take on jobs in the food service industrySubway is one of many local businesses looking for employees. - Adam MacInnisAnd thanks to Yves Bourgoin who sent me a message about my story on the “deteriorating conditions” arrival in Halifax earlier this week.
Apparently, they’ve been having staffing issues and have to close the dine-in restaurant because of a shortage of workers. And there was a shortage of ingredients for sandwiches too since there was only enough to make one. Not enough for the four of us in the car so again, off to the Tim’s in Tantallon. We’d waited that long, so another 45 minutes wouldn’t kill us.After exiting the 102 for the Hammonds Plains Road, I noticed the fast-food restaurants by the BMO Centre were closed.
The guy who buzzed us in told us the coffee shop had been forced to close overnights because they didn’t have any staff. Seemed like a bit of a pattern here. Gordon Stewart with the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia says the staffing shortages are affecting almost everyone in the food service industry. And fast food is especially hard hit because they need so many people. It’s unprecedented in a lot of ways.
