: This initiative with 902 ManUp is a direct community-related response that people have been saying is required or needed outside of increased money for policing. What can you tell me about other aspects of this conversation about gun control, and trying to reduce violence in the community?: Well, I've been using these two non-sitting weeks in the House of Commons to go across the country to engage directly with gun owners.
This government, our Liberal federal government, has a comprehensive plan when it comes to combat gun violence, and it's got three prongs. First, we need smart policies, and Bill C 21 will help to take some decisive steps at reducing gun violence and specifically handgun violence, which has become the number one type of gun used in homicides.
Second, we need to support law enforcement, and in the last two years, we've allocated $450 million, that's nearly half a billion dollars to bolster the CBSA. And yesterday, I was at the Halifax container terminal to see those funds being put to good use through technology where they're stopping illegal guns, stopping illegal drugs from getting into the country.
And third, and finally, we need to do the work on the front end, which means empowering local organizations to prevent gun crime before it starts.
