SHELDON MacLEOD: Are you better off now than a year ago?
It's something you hear from opposition politicians when they feel they have leverage, and with raging inflation and rising interest rates, it's pretty easy for most Canadians to answer that question — but what does it mean for the upcoming provincial and federal budgets?Canada's annual inflation rate eased more than expected to 7.0% in August. - PostmediaLiberals hound Progressive Conservatives overspending.
And inflation is a big hammer for an opposition leader with Churchill pointing out that if you made $70,000 last year, that salary is worth 8 per cent less this year. Bracket creep and taxes are in his crosshairs. Darrell Dexter only got one swing at being premier before the electorate decided to end his run. Not only did the NDP not win a second term, but Dexter didn’t even win his own seat in that election. And then we had Stephen McNeil and his team for eight years. And he was all about fiscal responsibility and a hard cap on labour contracts.
And with both a federal and provincial budget about to be tabled, that’s a tough position for an incumbent to defend.
