Although Shein may be the cheapest clothing retailer in the country, it is not the most affordable online platform to purchase garments.
Shein is the cheapest for new clothes, but if you consider the second-hand market, there are online options for that too.
National Clothing Retail Federation executive director Michael Lawrence has said that these objections are based on a feeble argument and consumers need to look at the bigger picture.Although these regulations need to protect those working in the local clothing industry, South African consumers may be making a valid point.
The stores used in the comparison were Shein, Mr Price, Pep, Zando, Clothing Junction, and Yaga. Prices from Woolworths and Cotton On were provided for context. As for the clothing retailers, all their clothing baskets came out to at least R50 more than Shein’s. However, when compared to retailers such as Cotton On and Woolworths, the difference no longer seems as large.
