Leader of the opposition Peter Bevan-Baker calls for a public inquiry into long-term care on P.E.I. in Charlottetown July 12. - Alison JenkinsP.E.I. Green Party Leader Peter Bevan-Baker said his office has heard from a large number of people with loved ones in long-term care. “Our mother was 88 years old, valued her independence, loved to socialize, read books and play games on her iPad,” said Thorburn Maneta. “She was sharp, very sharp, witty and loved to laugh. … Being in a wheelchair never limited her ability to have a fulfilling life.”

Chaisson was upset and concerned at her mother’s condition. She stayed for five hours that evening helping her mother consume some fluids. Finally, staff told Chaisson to leave. Reluctantly she did, only to receive a call from the home the following morning at 7:30 a.m. that her mother was unresponsive.“A broken arm should not be a death sentence,” said Thorburn Maneta to those gathered at the call for an inquiry.

The province’s Long-Term Care COVID-19 Expert Panel will deliver its final report to P.E.I. cabinet, which will then develop a report for the public, said the province’s terms of reference document.
