Kate Phelan tells British Vogue about what it's really like to style supermodel Iman.
’s January cover shoot, the photographer Nadine Ijewere and I wanted to celebrate Iman, rather than ageing her in an evening gown on a conventional shoot. We discussed the silhouettes and colours of emerging Japanese designers, such as Issey Miyake, in the ’80s – a time when Iman was really living her life and making the rest of us sound so boring. These creatives changed the shape of fashion. The idea intrigued and excited Iman.
It’s a different thing styling a woman who has travelled further in life than modelling. Fashion is still very important to Iman in the sense that she doesn’t want to be recognised as an older model. Some people can become invisible and lose their identity, but Iman is still very much there.
