Following the report Dwayne Johnson vetoed Justice Society characters in a Shazam! Fury of the Gods credits scene, Zachary Levi addresses the news.
After the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, a report revealed that a post-credits scene from the movie had to be changed due to a Dwayne Johnson request — with the actor also being revealed to have vetoed a Shazam appearance in Black Adam — and now Zachary Levi has responded to that report. The future for both characters at DC is looking dire, with Black Adam staying behind amid the old DC management's woes, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods heavily underperforming at the box office.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY On his Instagram story , Levi responded to The Wrap's report of Johnson's Shazam veto. Why Shazam and Black Adam have never met in the DC movies can be chalked up to Johnson himself, it seems. Levi answered with "the truth shall set you free" to the report that Johnson vetoed an appearance by Levi as Shazam in Black Adam, as well as blocked characters from the Justice Society appearing in Shazam! Fury of the Gods to recruit the hero. That role eventually went to characters from James Gunn's Peacemaker.
It is quite concerning that an actor such as Johnson had that big of a say in the old DC Universe to be able to veto the appearance of characters in other movies like Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Besides, the whole situation just emerges as evidence of how the old DC movies canon did not operate with the company's comic book history at heart.
When speaking in January at the slate reveal of the first 10 projects in the new DC Universe, Gunn talked about the negative treatment DC had received from past executives. Gunn's brutally honest comment that the old DC was "giving away IP like they were party favors at any creator who smiled at them" has become more timely with the recent Shazam/Black Adam debacle. Hopefully, Shazam! Fury of the Gods' Black Adam issue is the last remnant of DC's past troubles.
