It’s unclear whether there are three votes on the Shasta County Board of Supervisors to ban the use of the N-word during public meetings.
In the middle of public comment, Rickert introduced a motion to get the board to later discuss a code of conduct policy that would prohibit the use of the N-word. Several members of the public expressed support for such a plan. But things went briefly off the rails when resident Mark Kent called Blayz a “professional victim,” and said that if the code of conduct passes, then he himself should be protected from being called a “white supremacist.
Jones quieted the chamber after Kent’s remarks, and the board went back to hearing from speakers in support of a code of conduct. Because a code of conduct policy was not on Tuesday’s agenda, supervisors could not vote on the matter in the moment. The five members of the board voted unanimously to schedule discussion of a code of conduct in a future meeting, but it’s unclear whether there are three votes to ban the use of the N-word.
The events of Tuesday’s meeting indicate that Rickert and Garman will likely vote for a code of conduct policy, while Jones will likely vote against it. The other two supervisors, Chris Kelstrom and Kevin Crye, were more difficult to read. Kelstrom said to the crowd, “There is no making you happy, but I condemn that word, I condemn racism in general, and Nathan, I apologize that you had to hear that word.
