Bieber tied a season high by striking out nine Houston batters and established a season low with three hits allowed, attacking an aggressive Astros lineup with cut fastballs to take the sting out of their bats early.
Bieber retired nine of the first 10 Astros batters he faced and did not allow a hit until Kyle Tucker’s single in the fourth inning. It’s his third outing of six or more shutout innings this season and first since May 9 against Detroit. Bieber had gone more than a year since his last start of seven innings with at least nine strikeouts, and snapped a streak of five straight games where he failed to punch out more than five batters.
With Cleveland’s offense starting to shake out of its early-season slumber, Bieber said the entire club is gaining confidence. “I have a great internal support system, external support system,” Bieber said. “It is my job to be able to block those things out and go out there today and ultimately just compete. That’s one thing that I love to do and that’s compete against players around the league and against other teams.”
