Two points would give Victoria the regular-season crown
It’s crowded, and a little complicated, atop the Western Lacrosse Association standings heading into the final week of the regular season.
For the Victoria Shamrocks, a victory tonight in Langley against the Thunder would make things real easy for them. The two points would give Victoria the regular-season crown as they head into tonight’s action tied with the Nanaimo Timbermen with 24 points, but the Shamrocks have tonight’s game remaining, while Nanaimo has completed their regular season at 12-6.
The top four teams qualify for the WLA post-season so the Timbermen and Coquitlam Adanacs have already secured playoff spots. The Adanacs finish their regular season Thursday night with a game against the New Westminster Salmonbellies. It’s the Salmonbellies who could make things interesting. If New Westminster wins its final two games and the Thunder lose their last two games, the teams would be tied in points, forcing tiebreakers rules to come into play. If the Shamrocks lose their game tonight in Langley, there’s the possibility of a four-team tie for top spot, which would bring in more tiebreaker rules.
So if Victoria wants to keep things simple for themselves, a victory over the Thunder accomplishes that. Lose, and they rely on a little luck to decide who the Shamrocks will open the 2022 WLA playoffs against as the road to the Mann Cup starts to heat up.
