The San Francisco Unified School District offered a historic proposal to labor unions Tuesday to stave off a looming teacher strike.
In an email sent Wednesday to parents and employees, Superintendent Matt Wayne explained how these increases could quell a significant teacher shortage in the district. The raises would bring San Francisco public school educators toe-to-toe in salary with peer districts. Following the Tuesday bargaining session, union member and Willie Brown Middle School math teacher Michelle Cody said it was “obvious the district felt pressure from organizing,” which included pickets at various school sites throughout the calendar year.

Despite these commitments, the union views the district's “lack of vision in addressing long term solutions” as disrespectful, and Curiel said that attention hasn't been paid to other demands.
