Taylor Rogers turned in his 11th consecutive scoreless outing Tuesday and hasn’t allowed an earned run since tossing his glove in the trash.
SAN FRANCISCO — Taylor Rogers had a parting message Tuesday night after five minutes of answering reporters’ questions following his scoreless inning of work in the Giants’ 4-3 win over the Phillies, in which the bullpen took down 17 of the 27 outs.The last time Rogers met with a scrum of media, he had just tossed his glove in the trash. Unlike starting pitchers, who typically answer questions after each game, relievers too often only meet large groups of press when something’s gone wrong.
“I think I just really shook the earth a little bit in that Dodgers game and just threw everything off,” Rogers said. “When you’re a new person somewhere, they just create a narrative and I knew that wasn’t me. So I just grabbed a new Rawlings and started over.” Rogers primarily throws two pitches, a low-to-mid 90s sinker and a slow, big-breaking sweeper. In his first five appearances, batters were hitting .400 with an expected batting average of .600 against his fastball, and all five balls put in play had left the bat at more than 100 mph. In 12 appearances since, all but one of the 11 fastballs put in play have left the bat under 100 mph, with an expected batting average of .187 against the pitch.
