González spent 2 stints on IL in 2022 with similar back issue, which González has described as chronic.
González impressed last spring and made his way on to the Giants’ roster by the second week of the season. He was named the National League Rookie of the Month in May. But following a team flight to Atlanta at the end of June, he began experiencing discomfort in his back and was placed on the IL. He returned briefly but didn’t find the same success, and eventually landed back on the IL at the end of August, which ended his season.
González finished 2022 with a .254/.323/.360 batting line, but his hot start was overshadowed by some mental mistakes and a tough go at the plate after returning from the first IL stint. His first-half OPS was nearly 200 points higher than it was after the All-Star break . González wished to play for Team Mexico in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, but he was denied insurance coverage because he ended 2022 on the IL. He had hoped to use the newfound availability to secure an Opening Day roster spot, but between Michael Conforto, Mitch Haniger, Mike Yastrzemski and Austin Slater, most of the Giants’ outfield is spoken for.
Slater was scratched from the Giants’ Cactus League opener on Saturday with a sore elbow, but the club doesn’t believe it is serious.
