Giants 1B coach Antoan Richardson was ejected, but he says it came after the Padres 3B coach cursed at him with “undertones of racism.”

SAN FRANCISCO — Where there was once pure celebration, over Alyssa Nakken becoming the first woman to coach on field in an MLB game, has been shrouded by controversy over the lead up to the historic moment.

Richardson summoned reporters back to the clubhouse after they had returned to the press box in order to present his side of the story. Shildt has not given his side of the events that led to Richardson’s ejection, nor has any Padres representative at this time. Kapler said that while he “trust Antoan’s judgment 100%” he did not hear the comment Richardson says Shildt made to him.

Originally, Kapler had attributed Richardson’s ejection to a stream of chirps coming from the Padres’ dugout in response to Steven Duggar’s stolen base in the second inning, when the Giants were already leading 10-1. Kapler said Richardson had responded, and those words he returned to the Padres bench were what got him ejected.“I wanted to clear up some stuff,” Richardson began. “What happened tonight was the third base coach from the San Diego Padres was looking in our dugout.

“At that point, Kap came over to diffuse the situation. … I turned to Woody, like, ‘Shildt’s looking for you.’ … Shildt started to walk back toward third base. … He yelled, ‘You have to control that .’ At that point in time, I went to the top step and said, ‘Excuse me?’ Because I couldn’t believe what I heard. At that point in time, Gibson, the crew chief, decided to toss me from the game. …
