Aubry said 1.8 million Albertans have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime. And the number of those who are seeking resources and counselling support continues to rise. “The idea that some people have that you can just throw a little bit of money at this right away and the wait list will just go away is naive. There is going to be a steady demand,” she said.Article contentAASAS pleaded its case to the government about seven months ago, presenting research to show the need for greater investment.
Aubry said the provincial departments they’re working with have said there is a possibility for one-time funding of about $3.5 million for counselling supports, but that’s far from enough. It also wouldn’t help with efforts to increase access to justice or prevention efforts.
