Pensioner John Neville has numerous health problems when he was sent to HMP Wymott in Leyland
John Neville was locked up in June 2022 and moved to HMP Wymott in Leyland later that month. By the time of his imprisonment, Neville already suffered with several long-term health conditions including heart failure, diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
Those issues worsened during his time in hospital and on December 23, Neville was treated for a foot issue which included bone infection and dead tissue. In January, he was taken to hospital due to low red blood cells causing dizziness and weakness. He remained there for several weeks, needing treatment for high temperatures as well as oxygen support. On February 4, a hospital consultant told the prison healthcare team that Neville had rapidly deteriorated and was no longer receiving treatment.
As with all inmate deaths, an investigation into Neville's death was launched by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman. A report of that investigation noted he was the 16th Wymott prisoner to die since February 2020. All but one of those were from natural causes and the PPO has again issued recommendations on how to address issues with healthcare at the prison.
It noted: "The clinical reviewer concluded that the clinical care Mr Neville received at Wymott was partially equivalent to that which he could have expected to receive in the community. She found that Mr Neville’s diagnosis of heart failure was not identified in either of his prison health assessments and she raised concerns about the management of his diabetes. We found no non-clinical issues of concern.
