The 39-year-old Malindi Elmore, a mother of two young boys and a 1,500-metre specialist in her heyday as a track athlete, has re-invented herself for a second time after hanging up her spikes in 20…

The crying infant in the background on a phone call with Malindi Elmore offered the perfect setup to a question about how nice it would be to collect some prize money at the this year’s Vancouver Sun Run 10K.

She had only decided last September, just three months after giving birth to Oliver, that she would run a marathon. With the two young ones at home — Charlie is four — training for the 42.2K distance would be easier, she figured, than doing all the workouts — run, swim, bike — required for triathlon.

There has been a huge surge in the number of Canadian women running fast times in the marathon, led by Rachel Cliff of Vancouver. She set the new national mark of 2:26:56 at Nagoya, Japan, last month in just her second attempt at the distance. Elmore ran 33:06 in winning the Sun Run in 2010. “I remember tons . Just the energy of all the people was really cool. And it’s such a beautiful course.”

The 37-year-old from North Vancouver, a two-time winner of the Vancouver Sun Run 10K earlier this decade, will try to capture the women’s title for a third time. And it won’t be anything like what she faced in Aarhus, Denmark on March 31 at the IAAF cross-country world championships.
