In modern Star Trek, every Captain has their own catchphrase and Seven's no exception. Is this evidence of the franchise being too self-referential?
The tongue-in-cheek cliffhanger ending for Captain Seven of Nine in the Star Trek: Picard season 3 finale hints at a wider issue for new Star Trek captains. Seven's Picard season 3 story ends with her in command of the USS Enterprise-G, alongside her Number One, Commander Raffaela Musiker and Special Counselor to the Captain, Ensign Jack Crusher .
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In the 21st century era of the franchise, Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have both made a big deal of the captain of each show's hero ship having their own catchphrase.
It's not clear exactly what Seven's catchphrase will be, but fans are already speculating as to what phrase the new Enterprise captain will become known for. One possibility is a fun callback to Star Trek: Voyager season 6, episode 18, "Ashes to Ashes". In that episode, Seven is given responsibility for the USS Voyager's group of Ex-Borg children and delivers the memorable instruction that "Fun will now commence".
Why A Captain’s Catchphrase Is A Big Deal In New Star Trek Shows Not even legendary Star Trek icon, Captain James T. Kirk had his own catchphrase, so it's strange that it's become a modern Trek tradition. One of the reasons that the Captain's catchphrase is a big deal in modern Star Trek is because the new shows are being written by fans of the franchise.
That self-referential tone and fetishization of the past can be limiting for long-running franchises, but the catchphrases in modern Star Trek do work well. It's hard not to raise a smile when Captain Pike orders Lieutenant Erica Ortegas to "Hit it", or feel a warm glow from Captain Burnham's hopeful instruction of "Let's fly".
