At least 35 people have so far been identified as victims of an apartment rental scam in Oshawa that swindled more than $50,000 in rent payments for nonexistent building complexes marketed online.
, Durham Regional Police Service said seven more people have now contacted authorities, but police said they believe there might be more victims.
The DRPS Financial Crimes Unit began its investigation May 2022 after receiving reports of a man who allegedly advertised for apartments that were supposedly for rent in London, Ont., on Facebook Marketplace. The suspect was arrested May 14, after scamming victims out of the first and last month’s rent payments. The suspect, police allege, would use several social media platforms to communicate with the victims and cease “all communication” after the rent payment was deposited.
Police said the suspect faces several charges, including possession of proceeds obtained by crime, laundering proceeds of Canadian crime and failure to comply with breach of recognizance. “Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Det. Const. Finley of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5358,” Durham police said.
