Today marks the end of an era for tennis, as Serena Williams, one of the sport’s biggest, most respected names, has announced it is time for her to retire.Williams wrote candidly about the point she is at in her life—and the balancing act she plays every day, trying to be both the world-renowned star athlete she is on the tennis court and the mom and wife her family needs her to be.
The athlete has spent more than two decades at the top of the tennis world, winning her first major singles title at the 1999 US Open, and going on to win four Olympic gold medals and 23 Grand Slam singles titles—the most by any player in the Open Era, and the second-most of all time —among many other awards.
While retirement is a destination or a welcome conclusion for many athletes and professionals, Williams admitted that is not the case for her. She noted that if she were a man, she might not have to choose between a career that has given her so much and her family—but that’s not the case.
