Singaporeans may be in love with many things Korean, but the South Koreans, too, envy many aspects of Singapore.
Singapore’s love for all things Korean is not one-sided. Many South Koreans are fond of our country, too, as this writer finds out.
With such a good grade, she could enrol in any top university of her choice. But her heart is set on the National University of Singapore , and it has not wavered. In South Korea, the mindset about Singapore largely shifted in 2018, when the news was dominated by the historic summit held here between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and then US President Donald Trump.
He is immensely proud that he married a Singaporean, giving him a ticket to a life in our city state, and an escape from a home town labelled “Hell Joseon” by young people who struggle to find good jobs and buy a house.To him and other South Korean sons-in-law of Singapore, it is not just a case of the grass being greener here. South Korea fares no worse when it comes to economic power, with smartphones, chips and cars among its notable exports.
Another complaint he has is that Singapore is a tad boring, given the lack of four seasons and space. After all, our island is only the size of capital city Seoul. There is one big difference though – perceptions about leadership. Over decades, Singaporeans have generally trusted their leaders. My Korean best friend, naturally, is both a fan of Mr Lee and his son Lee Hsien Loong, who stepped down as prime minister in May after nearly 20 years in office. She even follows the younger Mr Lee on social media.
