“This policy, developed using the best advice, will be implemented compassionately, always with an eye to providing the best possible and most appropriate care to all Ontarians,” according to a joint statement by Health Minister Sylvia Jones and Long-term Care Minister Paul Calandra. The Ford government passed Bill 7 which addresses the issue of frail seniors and people with disability who remain in hospital beds because they haven’t found a bed in a nursing home of their choice.Article contenttap here to see other videos from our teamThese people will now be offered a bed in an alternative LTC home until their first choice is available.

“Regulations and guidance will be given to our health care partners that keep them close to home and respect religious, ethnic and language preferences,” the ministers’ statement says. “Couples will be kept together. When a patient’s preferred home is not available, they will continue to wait for a bed while receiving care in a more suitable place, such as another long-term care home.”

The government has said Bill 7 is necessary to help free up needed beds in hospitals, especially during the fall respiratory illness season.
