Role models are defined achievement, not age.
“Here you are, still walking around at your age. How marvellous. You are my role model,“ my seamstress exclaimed. Her husband, beaming in the background, also chimed in, “I told my wife who wants to retire at sixty-five, just look at Ms. Lukacs, still so strong.”
But it was not the first time I was being celebrated for my age. People quite generously have called me their “role model,” “amazing,” their “inspiration.” What did I do to deserve all this? All I did was to reach a certain age for which I do not take much, if any, credit. Now another birthday has come and gone.Article content
Actually, this “age thing” started well before I disclosed my age writing my column in Senior Living. In the year prior to the pandemic, I had visited my native land, Hungary, with a Senior Discovery Tour group. From the moment I checked in at the airport where the clerk remarked how well I looked for my age, to the cashier at a Budapest grocery store who politely inquired how old I was, the topic never stopped.
My other role model is right here in Canada. She is Hazel McCallion, the former longtime mayor of Mississauga, Ont, who at age 101 has been reappointed for another three-year term as director on the board of the Greater Toronto Airport Authority. The Canadian political icon says she enjoys keeping busy with her work on various boards. Now there is a role model!Article content
