U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, talks with reporters following party policy luncheons on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, in Washington, D.C.WASHINGTON — A bipartisan group of U.S. senators including John Cornyn of Texas on Sunday rolled out a deal to strengthen the nation’s gun laws by requiring greater scrutiny of young buyers and closing the so-called boyfriend loophole after a series of mass shootings, including in Uvalde last month.
“Families are scared, and it is our duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities,” the group, which included 10 Democrats, said in a statement announcing the agreement. The agreement the senators announced would not raise the age to buy guns, as some — including parents of victims of the Uvalde shooting — have urged in recent weeks. It would, however, establish a new “investigative period” to review juvenile and mental health records of gun buyers who are under 21.
