The 2009 event in Ottawa drew 453,000 fans and generated $80.5 million for the Ottawa economy
“I was lucky enough to play in two world juniors, and they were in great places in Boston and Geneva, Switzerland,” Phillips said at a Thursday afternoon press conference hosted by Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe. “But to have been a fan of the world juniors, sitting around during the holidays and see the tournaments over the years that have happened in Canada, it would have been that much more special to win it on home soil.
Phillips was on the road with the Senators at that time, watching on TV in the dressing room following a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.“To be a part of it and to watch Canada in the nation’s capital is going to be special for me,” he said. The Senators and OSEG, which oversees TD Place and the Ottawa 67’s, have been working together for several years to try and bring the event back to the city. They originally bid for the 2023 championship, which jointly went to Halifax and Moncton.
For a city still suffering from a downturn in visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament will be a major boost to the tourism industry. The 2009 tournament brought in an estimated $80.5 million into the Ottawa economy.
