For the Senators, Saturday’s game marked the mid-point of the five game road trip — they dropped the opening game 5-0 to the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday before rebounding with a 5-4 win over the Seattle Kraken Thursday — and it came after all the other action involving their rivals in the chase for the two wild card spots in the East.
The Senators began the game with plenty of jump, with the big line of Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle and Giroux aiming to establish itself physically. Only 15 seconds in, Giroux hit the post behind Demko. Seconds after Demko made an outstanding pad stop off Tkachuk on a Senators power play, a ghastly giveaway by Alex DeBrincat at the Senators blueline led directly to a shorthanded goal by Miller to make it 2-0.
The goaltending situation could be intriguing Sunday. After a collision on the play leading to the Canucks third goal, Sogaard was slow to get up, appearing to favour his leg. After getting medical treatment, he stayed in the game. As the Senators continued to show their frustrations, the Canucks put the game out of reach in third period. Dries made it 4-0, driving through the middle before ripping a shot over Sogaard’s trapper.
