Bob Jones is determined to try to help others after the devastating news he’s in a battle with ALS.

The Ottawa Senators announced Tuesday the club’s 53-year-old assistant coach has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and has opted to share the news publicly to help raise awareness for the ailment, which is widely referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

“It’s tough. I coached with him for years in Windsor and players love him,” Smith said after the club’s skate at the Canadian Tire Centre. “I know how many texts he’s received, I’ve received and he’s just a guy who’s cared about the players for decades. “He wants to be around just for his mental health, joking with the guys and keeping his spirits up rather than just going home and dealing with it there,” Smith said. “He has the freedom to come and go, but at this point he’s at the rink and he’s dealing with it the best he can.

While nobody would have blamed Jones if he wanted to go through the battle privately, he wants to do what he can to help others. A former head coach of the OHL’s Oshawa Generals and a longtime assistant with the Windsor Spitfires, Jones is the eye-in-the-sky for the club’s games at home and on the road. He and Smith are longtime friends from their days together in Windsor.
