The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the nomination of Kelly Craft to be the nation's top diplomat at the U.N. This comes after new details about the extent of her travels away from her post in Canada were revealed
The 15-7 vote came after the current ambassador to Canada faced questions from ranking member Bob Menendez at her June 19 confirmation hearing about the amount of time she spent away from her post and the reasons for her frequent travel to the U.S.Three Democrats — Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, Chris Coons and Chris Murphy — voted for Craft, as did all Republicans.
Craft took over the ambassador position in Ottawa in late October 2017. State Department records show she was absent from the country for part or all ofSenate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who recommended Craft for the U.N. post, is expected to quickly shepherd her nomination to a vote by the full Senate.
