THE Senate is expected to adopt today, Wednesday, a resolution asking the Philippine government to elevate before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) China's harassment of Philippine vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
Sen. Ana Theresia 'Risa' Hontiveros last June 19 introduced Resolution 659, urging the Department of Foreign Affairs to sponsor a resolution before the UNGA calling on China to stop bullying Philippine Coast Guard vessels in the WPS.The senator said that 'although not legally binding, UN General Assembly resolutions carry significant political weight.
Hontiveros noted that China has 'continuously' refused to accept the July 12, 2016 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration which invalidated its expansive claim in the South China Sea and WPS through its 'nine-dash line' policy.'Rather than comply with the decision, the Chinese government has instead chosen to ramp up its harassment of Philippine vessels, thus undermining the peace and stability in the region,' she said in her resolution.BGen.
