Lawmakers took up the governor’s teacher incentive proposal on Wednesday during the Senate Education Committee meeting, a proposal that could see teachers receive incentives between $5,000 and $15,000.

JUNEAU, Alaska - Lawmakers took up the governor’s teacher incentive proposal on Wednesday during the Senate Education Committee meeting.

Alaska Department of Education & Early Development Commissioner Deena Bishop, a former superintendent for the Anchorage School District herself, echoed Gov. Mike Dunleavy and said it’s time for something new and not rely on increases to the base student allocation to improve school performance outcomes. However, during the meeting, educators suggested increasing teacher salaries and better retirement packages would lead to better outcomes in attracting teachers than incentives.

Chris Heidemann of the Juneau Education Association had a warning for the governor if he vetoes the education package.
