Fetterman returned to his home in Braddock, Penn., after being discharged from a hospital in Washington where he was treated for depression.

"The care they provided changed my life," he said in the statement.

"You just won the biggest, you know, race in […] the country," he told CBS anchor Jane Pauley. "But depression can absolutely convince you that you actually lost. And that’s exactly what happened."Fetterman had "severe symptoms of depression" when he was admitted in February, according to the lead doctor on the senator's treatment team.

He also experienced "feelings of guilt and worthlessness, but no suicidal ideation," Williamson said, per Fetterman's office.
