There was little debate this week when state Rep. Tony Tinderholt raised an amendment on a school safety bill, changing it to allow private security firms to provide the armed guards required at every Texas school by the legislation.
In a statement to Hearst Newspapers, Tinderholt denied wrongdoing and accused Democrats of “trying to create controversy” over nothing. Furthermore, the law only applies to lawmakers who have a controlling interest in the business entity, and it also exempts measures that will affect an entire class of business entities.
“The number of conflicts in the Legislature is as numerous as bluebonnets in the spring,” said Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston. “It’s unavoidable given the part-time legislature and the sizable number of policies the lawmakers address.”
