While some Jersey Shore municipalities saw increased revenues from beach badge sales in 2021, others saw a decline in revenue.
NJ Advance Media reached out to the 36 Jersey Shore municipalities that require beach badges and received responses from 22. We spoke with these communities to understand the factors behind rising and falling beach badge revenue between 2020 and 2021.When the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in March of 2020, major tourist attractions on the Jersey Shore, such as the casinos in Atlantic City, closed and didn’t reopen until mid-July.
Vassar described the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day of 2021 as a “breakout summer,” because everyone had adapted to living during a pandemic and there was a relaxation of many COVID restrictions. Vassar also noted a trend starting back in 2020 of increased Shore visitors through the fall. Weather is another factor that impacts Shore business. If it rains a lot, Vassar said, the numbers of visitors will be “depressed a little bit.” Themay also impact some businesses, such as restaurants, that have to reduce hours because of a lack of staff. Overall, though, there’s reason for optimism, Vassar said.
“Breaking down the sales figures, we sold more seasonal and weekly badges in 2021 compared to 2020, which represents to me that more visitors were making longer term plans and spending larger chunks of time here at the Shore.” Wahl said based on early numbers so far during the 2022 season, he expects to see Avalon’s beach badge revenue to exceed 2021 numbers.
