Pierpaolo Piccioli closed out couture week with another magical, floral-themed show:
Author:Dara PrantPublish date:Jul 3, 2019Updated onJul 3, 2019In the final show of Fall 2019 haute couture week, Pierpaolo Piccioli offered a parade of hyper-saturated hues, exaggerated proportions and out-of-this-world craftsmanship for Valentino. It was another masterful collection — one filled with dreamy dresses and an entire botanic garden's worth of sunflower and poppy prints.
It began on an optimistic note with a sunny yellow, floor-length gown that featured tiers of chunky knit fringe. Roomy daywear done in a diverse color palette followed. There was a slouchy lilac pant, a shimmery turtleneck poking out from under a belted salmon-colored coat, a simple emerald green tie-waist frock — modeled by Lauren Hutton — and a couture iteration of a baggy Bermuda short, which boasted an entire bouquet of hand-painted flowers.
The eveningwear was easily digestible at times, from a truncated cobalt blue dress made out of a lustrous taffeta to a plunging silk-satin black number. But then, there were the dresses that were a feast for the eyes, those that printed magnificent landscapes on their accompanying hooded capes, and those composed of multiple sequins, feathers and vivid textural embroideries.
The show concluded with all of the expert craftsmen behind the 71-piece range coming out from their backstage posts to take a bow with Piccioli. The impeccably talented bunch then went over to kiss and say thank you to Valentino, the man who founded the house. But it is Valentino who should also be thanking them, for they are the ones keeping the house's legacy of luxury and sartorial magic very much alive.
