Eskom board chair Mteto Nyati discussed the importance of good leadership in the context of the power utility’s recovery in recent months.
Eskom board chair Mteto Nyati says the power utility’s workforce has always been committed to conducting good work and keeping the utility functioning efficiently.
Discussing leadership and the importance of choices made in the past, Nyati said it was the onus of leadership figures to own the choices they make. Referring to Eskom specifically, he said the power utility was allowed to wither away mainly due to the poor choices leadership made in the past. The power utility’s new leadership has positively affected the workforce’s morale, resulting in improved work ethic and quicker turnaround times.. When he was appointed as the new chair, the power utility was in chaos, with daily load-shedding and widespread leadership challenges. He said it was essential for the board to gain a deep understanding of Eskom’s issues, frequently engaging directly with power station managers for information.
Eskom’s improved performance is partly due to the board’s Generation Operational Recovery Plan, a two-year initiative that began in March 2023. “When we take a plant down, we work with people with deep expertise about the equipment used at that plant,” the board chair said.
