The City of Ottawa failed to protect the rights of its residents when thousands of protesters took over downtown last winter: report
The report urges the city to create a “needs map” that identifies neighbourhoods and communities that are especially vulnerable in times of crisis and that it develops outreach plans to support them when needed.
The occupation was so traumatizing, the report states, because of the “troubling realization for residents and businesses in downtown Ottawa that hate, with an inclination to violence, had arrived in their neighbourhoods and that officials had essentially welcomed it in.” Notably, the commission’s report also seeks a reform of the Ottawa Police Services Board to improve police oversight and urges the city to appoint an independent investigator to examine alleged failures of Ottawa police.Article content
