SDSU says inquiry into teen's rape claim wasn't opened sooner to protect SDPD criminal investigation; victim's attorney, father question SDSU's inaction
“Something like this sticks with you forever,” the woman said. “And all I can really do now is just hope that I can get some sort of justice somehow and feel like people are facing consequences for their actions because I feel like I’ve been facing the consequences for their actions.”
“We have done everything we can to support SDPD and its investigation, which we believe is the best way to hold those responsible criminally liable,” de la Torre said. Gilleon said one purpose of a Title IX investigation is to prevent future incidents. “Police are looking at the past only — did they commit a crime — not to prevent anything,” he said.
The university said the victim had requested confidentiality through San Diego police. A university spokesperson said San Diego police alerted the university on July 22 “that it had concluded its investigation” — contradicting a police statement that it was still active — and that SDSU could proceed with its own probe.
In a statement to the Union-Tribune on Monday, the university confirmed that a “relative of the victim contacted UPD” on Oct. 19 but said “a police report was never filed with the UPD.” The university’s statement made a distinction between the relative contacting University Police and filing a police report.
