While at SDCC2023, Screen Rant spoke to TheCreator filmmaker Gareth Edwards about the surprising inspiration for his new movie, the increasing importance of AI, and what he loves about Star Wars:
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Gareth Edwards returns to the director's chair after several years with his new original sci-fi movie The Creator, which arrives in September. He made a splash in 2016 with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was critically acclaimed and led to one of Disney+'s best Star Wars television shows, Andor.
I go over there, and we end up touring all of Vietnam and seeing everything. You can't help but see all that imagery from the Vietnam War and think of films like Apocalypse Now and all that. We were in these paddy fields in the absolute middle of nowhere, and I still had this science fiction thing in my head. I just kept watching everybody and turning them into a robot and going, "Oh my God, this is really cool.
I spent a day going down that rabbit hole myself because I read an article about how Google has a sentient AI as well. I feel like it's right on the doorstep of where we are. The big upside to the cameras we used was, for those who can remember using film in a camera, you would get different ratings for how light or dark a scene was. If you're filming in daylight, you'd have a hundred ISO, a hundred ASA. I don't know if anyone remembers that. When it was dark, you could get film that was 80 ISO, which meant you'd be able to get a little bit more light in the camera. These cameras do 12,800 ISO and they can shoot under moonlight and still see.
Essentially, these wars are going on over in Asia with America and the West trying to destroy and wipe out AI. John David's character is basically – spoiler alert, so just skip ahead if you don't want to know anything – undercover at the start of the movie trying to infiltrate this terrorist [group] of AI to find the Creator.
