In his regular column for the Record, the SNP leader at Westminster says Scottish Labour MPs must decide whether they will protect their government’s austerity plans or Scotland’s interests.
Television cameras capture your every movement, with your words stored in the deepest of Westminster vaults for the rest of human history by an ever-eager team of Hansard clerks. Voting, however, is slightly different.
During votes, two doors at the end of each lobby sit slightly ajar, allowing enough space for a single MP, and their sizeable political baggage, to squeeze through at a time; before being slammed shut when the allocated period within which you can vote is brought to an abrupt end. Despite their party in Scotland being against the two-child benefit cap and clear assurances that they would deliver change, every single Labour MP from Scotland followed their Westminster Whips and set off to reject SNP plans that had garnered support from no less than eight other political groupings in the Commons, plus a squad of independent MPs.
No, they would likely argue that the Government has set up a ‘taskforce’ to look into the two-child cap and that this will report back, in an as yet unspecified timeframe, with the potential for good news. Or that the Tories crashed the economy, and the money just doesn’t exist to lift children out of poverty right now.
And that’s why it is so important to remember that the most important thing in politics isn’t actually what happens in-front of those tv cameras in the House of Commons Chamber.
