The Raptors should be good, but only the most optimistic of supporters would forecast greatness in the coming season.
And they should comfortably make the playoffs, but a first-round exit is also a distinct possibility. Unlike the Leafs, the Raptors have neither the top-end superstars nor the series of playoff failures that give this season a sense of urgency. Unlike the Blue Jays, they are no one’s idea of pre-season championship favourites. But a team normally enters a season with a general expectation of improvement on the previous campaign, unless they are rebuilding or tanking.
This would all make a little more sense if the Raptors hadn’t overachieved last year. Once their 2020 title defence turned into the COVID bubble season and then the Tampa Tank, last year’s team began the season with relatively low expectations for the first time in a long time. Kyle Lowry was gone, Pascal Siakam was still searching for his game, Fred VanVleet had never been the number one point guard before and Scottie Barnes was rookie with an unorthodox set of skills for a lottery pick.
VanVleet was an All-Star, Siakam made the All-NBA team, Barnes was a revelation. A team that was supposed to be finding its footing after the disastrous season in Tampa instead raced almost to the top half of the East.
