Will the producers be able to resist an unlikely title chase for plucky little Richmond? Or will it stick to what made it enjoyable in the first place?
Let us answer the second question first. Ted Lasso’s third season has much of what has made it a hit. It’s funny and sweet, and once again largely ignores how top-end soccer works. Having been promoted back to the Premier League in the Season 2 finale, Richmond’s players and staff are aghast at pre-season predictions that expect them to be relegated again. Why they would be surprised by this is unclear, because promoted teams are often relegated after one season in the top flight.
And yet there’s a sense that the sports-movie that it has resisted being will break out before this is all done. Season 3 begins with Lasso’s former protégé, Nate, having left Richmond for the head coach job at West Ham United. He remains strangely concerned with what people say about him on Twitter — a terrible idea for anyone working in professional sports — and he still hates Ted for some reason.
