When the stadium that became Oriole Park at Camden Yards was eventually opened in 1992, 30 years ago this baseball season, it was anything but uniform
. It was aggressively asymmetrical, with a jagged outfield fence that deliberately echoed the ballparks of baseball’s heyday, when it wasn’t uncommon for the same field to have both short corners and a cavernous centre field. Or a short left field and a deep right field. Or a giant green wall in left, or a brick wall for an outfield fence.
“It was an eyesore,” says Bill Stetka, the Orioles’ team historian, showing a reporter around the stadium on a warm spring night. The railway and warehouse had long been out of use, and the building was dirty and stained by smoke and coal. But getting rid of it was an expensive ordeal, and sometimes good ideas are born out of desperation. Rather than being demolished, the warehouse was cleaned up. Scrubbed, Stetka says, brick by brick.
