On the day when a star of the sport said she was on the way out, a much newer one took another step on the road back
In the morning, Serena Williams announced her intention to retire, via the extremely modern method of a first-person essay in a fashion magazine, after the U.S. Open that begins later this month. It was an announcement that hit tennis like a thunderclap, while also adding a frisson of excitement to Williams’ Wednesday night match at the National Bank Open, which could be her farewell performance in Canada.
Much has happened since, all of it well told by now. The injuries, the layoff, the decision to take time away from the sport so that she could find her competitive flame again. But with the Williams announcement of her pending retirement, the juxtaposition with Andreescu is hard to avoid. The foil for the young Canadian’s greatest accomplishments is finally stepping away from the sport, just as Andreescu returns to the place where she got one of her biggest wins.
It was flashes of the old Bianca, mixing up a variety of shots and keeping her opponent off-balance with an aggressive game, while furiously winning just enough of the big points. But it was also flashes of the old Bianca, battling health issues and looking at times like she was labouring just to stay on the court. When her body has allowed, Andreescu has been one of the top players in the game, but those stretches have continued to be relatively rare.
