A faction is looking to oust MLBPA No. 2 Bruce Meyer, but it's becoming clear that if they succeed union head Tony Clark could also go.
Agent Scott Boras on Tuesday morning railed against of Major League Baseball Players Association leadership, saying Marino and his supporters had undertaken a “coup” that should “never be done.” Marino shot back that Boras’ support of Clark should be considered “alarming” and insinuated that Boras’ effectiveness was waning. Some player leaders inside the union are aggressively pushing for Marino, who briefly worked at MLBPA, to replace Bruce Meyer, the union’s deputy director.
Boras has long stood as a divisive figure in the agent community, and inside the commissioner’s office as well — in no small part because he is typically effective, even if this winter his results have been below general expectations. Boras did believe the MLBPA needed to add firepower to its staff after the 2012-16 and 2017-21 CBAs worked favorably for the league, and Clark, who led the bargaining team in 2016 himself, brought in Meyer in 2018.
